The first foursome in the clubhouse Monday, May 5, at the Class 5A Metro-West girls golf regional had plenty of time to go over scorecards in peace and quite.

Arvada West senior Megan Lemcke hits her drive on the 1st hole on the meadows course Monday, May 5, at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood. Lemcke shot a round of 86 to qualify for the Class 5A state tournament.

Lakewood sophomore Andi Hibbert, Chatfield senior Hannah Paulson, Brighton sophomore Jessie Joachim and Standley Lake junior Laura Heien finished three holes ahead of the group behind them Monday afternoon at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood. It took the rest of the field more than 30 minutes to finish their rounds, even with a shotgun start.

The top foursome not only zipped through the par-72 course on the links and meadows course in just over four hours, but they occupied the top spots when all the scorecards were finally turned in.

Hibbert, the back-to-back 5A Jeffco League individual medalist, fired a round of 4-over-par, 76 to easily take the individual title by eight strokes.

"I was expecting a little bit better," said Hibbert, who was playing on her home course. "But it will do for now."

It was a big turnaround for Hibbert after ballooning to an 89, her worst round of the spring, at the Ashley Forey Invitational a week early at Rolling Hills Country Club. The sophomore bogeyed her opening hole Monday, but recovered nicely, making several mid-range par saving putts throughout the round.

"My putting was actually pretty decent today," Hibbert said. "There were definitely a lot of four or five footers that were critical. Luckily, I pulled them off."

Heien, the medalist runner-up in 5A Jeffco this season, finished in a three-way tie for third. The Standley Lake junior failed to take advantage of the best weather for a tournament so far this season.

"I was just really inconsistent," Heien said. "I had good shots every now and then, but I couldn't get a roll going."

Pomona junior Carly Russell chips her way out of trouble on the links course Monday, May 5, at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood. Russell shot a round of 89 at the regional tournament to qualify for the 5A state tournament.

The Gator's lone birdie came on the par-3 seventh hole on the meadow's course. However, Heien couldn't help Standley Lake overcome Lakewood's continued dominance this season. The Tigers won the regional team title by 11 shots over second place, Pomona.

Standley Lake will have two golfers at state with Heien and senior Mikayla Passanante both qualifying.

Lakewood qualified its entire team for the 5A state tournament scheduled for May 19 and 20 at Raccoon Creek Golf Club in Littleton. The next 16 top individual scores also punched their tickets to state.

Wheat Ridge freshman Katie Moats overcame any jitters of being in her first regional tournament to shoot a solid round of 85, earning a bid to the state field in a few weeks.

"It was really hard," Moats said. "Golf is a mental game. You really have to stay focused."

Moats hopes to follow in the footsteps of 2007 Wheat Ridge graduate Kela Powers. Powers qualified for the state tournament each of her four years golfing for the Farmers.

"She (Powers) is a good role model," Moats said. "State is a very hard thing to get into. It's a hard place to place, but I'd like to get into the top 10."

Green Mountain sophomore Nicole Fields was one of the surprises in the regional tournament. The younger sister of 2007 Green Mountain graduate Sarika Fields, who finished in a tie for 35th at state last year, shot a career-best round of 87 to qualify for the state tournament.

"She (Sarika) just told me to play well," Nicole said of the sisterly advice she was given before the tournament.

While Moats, Fields, Arvada West senior Megan Lemcke (86) and Bear Creek junior Courtney Lawson (99) will be the lone representatives from their schools, Pomona will take a trio of golfers with junior Carly Russell (89), freshman Nicole Hulbert (90) and senior Megan Williams (93) all making the cut.
