Property owners in the Downtown General Improvement District might see a special tax for parking lifted if the city abolishes the district.

The Golden City Council on May 1 discussed eliminating the district, which is suppose to raise money for parking maintenance.

But the amount of money collected from the district is small compared to the amount the city invests each year, City Manager Mike Bestor said.

"It will be a nice gesture for the merchants of downtown," he added.

Projected 2008 revenues for the district fund is $35,435.

Council member Joe Behm questioned whether the property owners would really pass the money down to their tenants. Council agreed that downtown merchants should be informed if the tax district is abolished so they could talk to their landlords.

Council member Karen Oxman viewed the abolishment as "getting rid of one level of bureaucracy that we really don't nee."

Council decided to continue discussing the elimination of the downtown tax district. City staff will draw up drafts of ordinances for the council to consider in future business meetings.
